2ND KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS

1.

Krakow Branch of the Polish Composers’ Union announces 2nd Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition for Young Composers. Composers from every country, who will not be over the age of 35 at the moment of its closing, can take part in the Competition.

2.

The subject of the Competition is a composition for string quartet (two violins, viola and cello), with a duration from 9 to 14 minutes.

3.

One participant can submit no more than two compositions. A composition cannot be earlier performed, published in any form or awarded in any competition.

4 copies of a score as well as score in pdf format on a compact disc, marked with an emblem and a title, with duration written, and a sealed envelope marked with the same emblem, containing an application form, a short bio note, a note about the piece and a photo (in jpg format), should be sent to the address:

not later than on 28 February 2019 (the date of submitting the score decides).

The Jury of the Competition: Marcel Chyrzyński (chairman), Zbigniew Bargielski, Ivan Buffa (Slovakia), Wojciech Widłak and Justyna Duda-Krane, grants one Main Prize – 1000 USD (gross). What is more,
the awarded composition will be premiered in May 2019 on the concert during
31st International Festival of Krakow Composers.

The Jury may not award the Main Prize. Honorary awards may be granted. The decision of the jury is irrevocable and will be announced not later than on 15 March 2019.

6.

Participating in the Competition, a composer declares that the composition can be recorded for purposes of the Organisers of the concert, without any financial claims from his side.

Copies of the score and parts of compositions will be further the property of the Krakow Branch of the Polish Composers’ Union.

7.

Application for the Competition means that a composer agrees to these Regulations. Compositions not meeting the requirements of the Regulations will not be taken into account during the Competition.

8.

Organisers of the Competition have the right to change the date or to cancel the performance of the awarded composition from independent causes.

Minutes of the Meeting of the Jury

of 2nd Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition

for Young Composers 2018

The meeting of the Jury of 2nd Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition for Young Composers 2018 was held on the 11 of March 2019 in Krakow.

37 (thirty seven) scores (from the following countries: Armenia, Austria, Chile, China, China/Germany, Czech Republic, Holland, Hong Kong, Hong Kong/Canada, Israel, Canada, South Korea, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, USA, Great Britain, Italy, Italy/Poland) were submitted to the Competition. 5 (five) of them were rejected as they were against regulations.

The Jury consisted of: Marcel Chyrzyński (chairman), Zbigniew Bargielski, Ivan Buffa (Slovakia), Justyna Duda-Krane (Dafo Quartet) and Wojciech Widłak. The Secretary of the Competition was Aleksandra Patalas.

The Jury, after examining 32 scores, decided to award the Main Prize – 1,000 USD (gross) – to the composition titled:

Szepty (emblem: 500.K53).

Moreover, the Jury decided to grant 3 (three) honorable equivalent distinctions to the compositions titled:

Interpolations (emblem: 211289)

De profundis (emblem: bz#2205) and

San-Guei (emblem: CSC9).

When the envelopes had been opened, it appeared that the winner of the Main Prize is Olgierd Juzala-Deprati (Poland). The winners of the honorable equivalent distinctions are Otto Wanke from Austria (emblem 211289), Andrzej Ojczenasz from Poland (emblem bz#2205) and Xinyang Wang from China (emblem CSC9).

The official reading of the protocole and the premiere of the composition granted the Main Prize will take place during the concert on the 15th of May 2019 at 7 p.m. in “Florianka” Recital Hall on Sereno Fenn’s 15 Street in Krakow. The concert will be a part of the 31st International Festival of Krakow Composers and the awarded composition will be performed by “Dafo String Quartet” from Poland.

The subject of the competition was a piece for flute, clarinet, violin, viola and cello.
